Regions Hospital
Regions Hospital is a seven-building campus located in downtown St. Paul and is the only Trauma One facility in the east metropolitan area. After years of adding buildings, the site had become a rat maze of hallways.
With the addition of a seven-story, three-wing surgical tower, it became evident that the wayfinding status quo would not work. We created a plan to separate the hospital into sections and renumbered every room. Once you consider this, no small task also meant updating phone systems, EPIC medical systems, gas lines, and emergency call systems.
The hospital site, with its two main floors, presented a unique challenge. To address this, we implemented an alpha-numeric system that clearly indicates the section and floor at all times. This straightforward system is particularly beneficial for non-English speaking patients and families. We also renamed lobbies and parking garages to align with the adjacent section, further enhancing the clarity of our wayfinding system.
