Hennepin County Central Library
The Central Library, a towering structure spanning one city block and five stories, posed a unique challenge in terms of navigation. With as many potential destinations as books, a structured approach to information hierarchy was crucial. We meticulously broke down the levels, ensuring a simplified pathway for visitors as they progressed through the building.
Working with Cesar Pelli and Architectural Alliance, we created a sign system that functioned well and complimented the architecture. LEDs were used to highlight areas of the signs to enhance visibility. Directional signs are all designed to be easily moved to keep up with the changing collection. Stack-end signage was integrated into the millwork yet can be easily and inexpensively changed.
One of the first buildings to incorporate digital signage, we used computer displays to reserve conference rooms, publish special event notices, and display simple maps.
